Spotted: Putter roundup from the 2024 Procore Championship

Published

on

Most weeks out on tour there are always plenty of new and cool putters floating around in players bags or on the putting green. We caught quite a few this week at the Procore Championship so lets take a look at some of the top flatsticks.

Nick Hardy: Swag Handsome Prototype

A mix between the Handsome One and Handsome Two, Nick has been playing versions of the head shape for a little while now. The bumpers are a combination of small and flat with the overall shape from address that is more squared off than the Handsome One, yet much softer edges than the Handsome Two. Swag’s Drip Face milling has been around since 2019 and was created to reduce side-spin on off-center strikes.

OdysseyAi-One Square 2 Square Jailbird

It looks like Odyssey is the latest to jump into the “toe-up” style putter movement. My guess is that the center location of the shaft will allow the face of the putter to point toward the target throughout the stroke. The Jailbird Square 2 Sqaure features Odyssey’s Versa alignment stripes on the top, and, of course, the famous Ai-One face for consistent ball speed on mishits. It is hard to tell from the photos but to my eye, it looks like the body of the putter might be slightly stretched from face to back in order for the balance to be correct and maybe add stability.

Mac Meissner: Scotty Cameron T-9.5 Prototype

We have seen a lot of golfers on the professional tour testing out Scotty’s Phantom 9-style putter. Mac was testing out this T-9.5 that features a mid-length welded L-neck and twin full-length sightlines on the top. The face has a deeper milling pattern on it for a softer feel and the iconic Circle T logo is etched into the heel. Mac’s T-9.5 has two 10-gram weights installed on the sole and is finished in a matte silver to reduce glare.

Charley Hoffman: Scotty Cameron T-11 Prototype

Fan favorite Hoffman has a very unique T-11 putter with all the different alignment lines on it. From the top, you can see a short sightline that starts at the face, a half-circle that encapsulates the site line, and then twin lines out on the flanges that are all filled in red paint. The semi-circle comes to a taper at each end of it for a very different look at address. Hoffman went with the single bend shaft for a more face-balanced feel and a deeper milled face to make it softer and more muted. He has two heavy 35-gram weights on the sole that might work with some counterbalance weight under the SuperStroke Traxion Flatso XL grip.

Evnroll Z1 Zero

A very interesting hosel placement is used to create a face-forward, or toe up, weighting. The neck looks to be a traditional L neck that is installed backwards so the shaft enters the putter head more near the center. Twin site lines are etched into the bright blue finish and there is a hole in the middle that of course picks up your golf ball. The Z1 Zero features Evnroll’s now famous Sweet Face milling where the horizontal grooves control ball speed on center and mishits so you have great distance control. There are twin movable weights up near the face and the rear of the head has been milled out to get the weighting to allow the face to always point towards the target.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
