Santa Monica: Toulon Golf releases latest Small Batch putter

Published

on

Toulon Golf’s latest Small Batch offering draws its inspiration from the flatstick used by a certain 15-time major champion and native Californian. The Small Batch Santa Monica follows the Small Batch Dogwood, Montecito, Vista, and Sea Island in Toulon Golf’s release of limited offerings.

In designing the Santa Monica, Toulon targeted soft radii while retaining the crisp, squared address profile of the putter design. Seeking a “vintage look,” the company paid particular attention to topline thickness and radius. Back bumper width was also a focal area in crafting the latest Small Batch release.

Sean Toulon and company indicated hours of slow machining the head was followed by hand polishing. As featured in other putters in the Small Batch lineup, the Toulon Golf Santa Monica’s face utilizes the company’s Super Fine Double Fly Cut milling.

The sole of the Santa Monica features micro milling to showcase the tri-sole design with the model name engraved. The company’s Candy Red paintfill is applied, which complements a Candy Red Toulon pistol grip.

The neck design is Toulon’s modified L-shaped H1 with a full shaft offset. The Santa Monica is finished in Toulon Golf’s new Tour Satin Front finish.

In keeping with the optics of arguably the most famous putter in golf, the topline features a single sight dot.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
