Why I choose to play a vintage wedge – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing their vintage wedges. WRXer ‘TimZ’ has been looking at a few wedges from the early 2000’s recently and reached out to our members looking for the reason why they choose to play a vintage wedge over a modern day creation.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- hackinghokie: “I play a set of BECU Ping Eye 2 wedges from 1990 and they’re phenomenal. I know folks say to replace wedges every few years to maintain optimal spin and performance, but I’ve had perfectly fine results playing a number of vintage wedges. As long as the wedge is in good shape, I’d feel comfortable using it.”
- sheepdawg: “I stuck an almost new BeCu Hogan Special SW. in my bag in October. I’d had it since the 90s. Man what a sweet wedge. The first time out I hit a few really nice short shots and on the last hole got up and down out of a bunker. Liked it so much I bought it’s twin on ebay for around $25 shipped. I forgot these have a unique feel.”
- bhard315: “My current 52 and backup 52 are both Vokey 200 series wedges. Both are starting to wear out quite a bit but I also have 4 mint condition Oil Can Vokey 200s in my wedge collection. All 52 degrees. Not letting go of those at all. Fantastic wedges.”
- deejaid: “My pitching wedge and gap wedge match my set which is modern, but my sand wedge is an early 80’s Spalding EV-A wedge. Very narrow sole, huge amount of bounce, leading edge onset, not offset. I use this club everywhere from 75 yards in, except for green side bunkers. It is great out of deep rough or tight lies, opens up beautifully for flop shots. Out of the sand I use a Ping ISI nickel lob wedge. It is like cheating. Pops the ball out straight up and on the green with ease.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

My sand wedge is an original Ben Hogan Sure Out, 56 deg x 12 or 14 or 16 bounce. Originally from around 1965. Big heavy sole. It works. I hear that Callaway bought Hogan Co. way back when in order to get the Sure Out. Lots of Alien type wedges are pale copies, without the weight of the Hogan. But my other wedges are newer, a Mizuno S5, Mizuno T7, and now a Vokey T grind for the hard pan where I play now.
