Collin Morikawa unveils new TaylorMade P790 iron at the 2023 Open Championship
It’s common practice for Open Championship players to switch out a high-lofted fairway wood for a long iron to help deal with windy links conditions.
As such, Collin Morikawa’s switch to a TaylorMade P790 3-iron ahead of The Open Championship isn’t all that surprising. That is, until you realize it’s actually an unreleased TaylorMade P790 model.
That’s right, Morikawa is switching to a never-before-seen, fourth-generation P790 3-iron at Royal Liverpool Golf Club after conducting testing earlier in the week.

According to a TaylorMade representative, Morikawa “needed a driving iron for this course. He tested both 2 and 3 irons in the P790, and preferred the offset and the way the 3 iron sat at address. He used it both off the tee and on approach shots during practice rounds.”
Morikawa’s 3-iron comes in at 18.5 degrees of loft, 59-degree lie angle, 39 3/8 inches, D2.5 swing weight, and it’s equipped with a True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115 shaft.
According to a TaylorMade rep, the new TaylorMade P790 irons are set to release at the end of the summer.

Morikawa is also switching into a TaylorMade Hi-Toe wedge to help with turf interaction at Royal Liverpool. He fills out his wedge setup with TaylorMade’s new MG4 wedges (50 and 56 degrees).

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

The satin is BUTT UGLY… Taylormade has been going the wrong direction with the club aesthetics. First they wreck the driver crown. Now they kill the distance irons

I knew it. I recently received a warranty replaced 8 iron, as I purchased a set last June. It looked a bit off, but the representative told me it was last years casting. I definitely believe I have a fourth gen 8 iron right now. The differences are subtle, but definitely noticeable.

Curious, what would you say the differences are? Do you prefer it to the previous model? I recently got fitted and was ready to pull the trigger on a set of the current P790 but now debating whether I should wait for these new ones to release.
