SPOTTED: Justin Rose testing a new Axis1 prototype putter

Published

on

Since 2019, Justin Rose has been using an Axis1 Rose putter, which he’s used to lead all players in strokes gained: putting in major championships during that time.

The putter, which was designed in collaboration with Rose himself, is uniquely torque-free and has the center of gravity positioned in the center of the putter face. It’s a multi-material head made from 304 stainless steel in the front section, and a proprietary composite material in the back.

Rose spoke in-depth about the Axis1 Rose putter at the 2022 U.S. Open in our TikTok video below:

On Tuesday at the 2022 Wyndham Championship, though, Rose was spotted testing an all-new prototype putter from Axis1.

According to Axis1 Vice President Phil Long, the new prototype has a three-piece construction, but is made to look one-piece at address.

“Think hollow-body construction in an iron, but in a putter. It’s 360-degree plasma welded. It has a stainless steel frame, two Tungsten plugs in the heel and toe on the inside of the putter, and then an aluminum sole plate.

“It allows us to give the Christmas (look) of a stainless steel putter with our technology, keeping the center of gravity perfectly in the center of the striking face, putter sitting at 12 o’clock perfectly balanced. Rose’s original putter has a carbon fiber back piece on it, so obviously that’s a very light piece. There’s a lot of other companies that have had multi-material constructions in the market. We were thinking, ‘How can we create a putter with a similar shape that appears to have the Christmas of a one-piece putter?’ That’s how we came up with this.”

Speaking with GolfWRX, Rose said the new prototype putter “looks really clean, and it feels great.”

While he’s undecided whether the new putter will go in play this week just yet, we’ll keep an eye on his flatstick choice as Thursday approaches.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
