What to do when you have 3-wood phobia? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing solutions for ‘3-wood phobia’. WRXer ‘AP76’ kicks off the thread saying:

“Hi guys, been through countless 3-woods and for the life of me I can’t get one I can hit consistently. I mostly hook them or throw in the occasional top! It’s baffling as I am a decent ball striker, but I think this is mostly between the ears.”

And our members have been sharing their suggestions and advice in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • NoTalentLefty: “I suffered with this. As a final straw, I ordered a 3 wood from a TV commercial. It worked. The Adam’s Tight Lie gave me hope.”
  • ChipNRun: “Go with a 4W. I’m in my eleventh season of a 4W + 7W setup (although I switched models a couple of times). 4W has a couple of extra degrees of loft to help with launch and (usually) a shorter shaft to help with control (your hook and top problem). Studies show that many golfers hit a 4W more reliably, and sometimes longer than a 3W.”
  • Cliffy2020: “Get a Ping G425 5W and turn the loft down as needed/wanted. It also has a “flat” setting on the hosel adapter that will help against the hooker.”
  • R5Two: “7w and 3HL baby. Great combo.”

Been using the 915f 16.5 since 2015 and the 906f4 15.5 bent to 16 since 2007. Both trimmed 1/2″. Needing a fairway finder has never been a problem.

BTW, the pear shape of the 906 is beautiful and I hope Titleist brings it back. Those who have one, know.

You learn or get taught how to hit one. It’s a swing/ thought/ technique issue and easily fixed if you put the work in.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
