SPOTTED: Tiger Woods is testing a new TaylorMade iron at the 2022 PGA Championship (UPDATED)

Note: This story is still developing and we will update as more news and photos become available. The featured image is credited to TaylorMade.

Update: 5/17/2022

Our new in-hand photos of Tiger Woods’ 2022 WITB at the PGA Championship revealed more than we originally reported below.

In addition to adding a TaylorMade P-770 3-iron to the bag to replace his P-7TW 3-iron, it appears that Woods will also be adding a P-770 2-iron to replace his former 5-wood. Each of the new P-770 long irons are equipped with True Temper Dynamic Gold MID Tour Issue X100 shafts.

Should his bag setup stay the same during competition as it looked on Tuesday, Woods will play the 2022 PGA Championship without a 5 wood.

Original story post below 5/16/2022

Early Monday morning, Tiger Woods played in a practice round at Southern Hills ahead of the 2022 PGA Championship. Thanks to photographs taken during his Monday session, GolfWRX members began speculating that Woods was trying out a new TaylorMade driving iron.

As it turns out, the speculation was not misguided.

We confirmed with TaylorMade on Monday afternoon that Woods is indeed testing a new TaylorMade P770 3-iron that would replace his former P-7TW 3-iron.

Unlike Woods’ P-7TW iron, the P-770 model has a hollow-bodied construction and a thru-slot speed pocket in the sole to boost ball speed across the face.

In addition to the new head, Woods’ P770 3-iron is equipped with a True Temper Dynamic Gold MID Tour Issue X100 shaft, rather than the standard X100 Tour Issue shaft he had in his P-7TW 3-iron head. True Temper’s new “MID” version is designed to increase launch and spin, providing a higher peak height and steeper landing angle.

Here’s an educational sheet on True Temper’s MID Tour Issue shaft for reference:

According to a TaylorMade rep on Monday, Woods is finding the P770 club to be “more forgiving” and he “can hit it further/higher, as well as can hit the stinger.”

We will provide an in-hand Tiger Woods WITB update as soon as possible. We’ll keep you informed on any further changes once we know.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

He had it in the bag and should have left it in the bag. Hit it very poorly in round one.

Wonder if those distance irons keep the ball down for those low punch out shots from the woods?

It’ll be out of the bag by Wednesday night. He’s done this before. Save your money WRX’ers.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
