The best wedges you’ve ever owned? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the best wedges they’ve ever played. WRXer ‘theothertwo’ kicks off the thread with his selection, saying:

“Just retired my Miura Tour Milled wedges (52 and 58) after almost two years, probably the best wedges I ever owned next to the original Cleveland TA 588 chrome wedges (56 and 60) from the ’90s.”

And our members have been sharing their picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Stinger83: “I love my Glides. But if I’m honest, my short game felt crisper with the Vokeys.”
  • M3fuz: “RTG588s. Those wedges had the perfect weight for me. I never got along with Vokeys for some reason – just never felt comfortable with them, but I would have no problem putting my old 588 back in the bag if needed.”
  • Pepperturbo: “THE BEST wedges I ever played were the Original Snake Eyes by Ernie Vadersen. They were so outstanding, in the 90s, I bought 3, 4 club sets at $175 ea club that lasted until around 2013 when I switched to Miura. I still have a few of them in my office for chipping.”
  • Is Golf Fun Or Work: “Cleveland 588 RTG, played those until the grooves were worn out.”
  • kwcsports: “Nike VR Forged are my favorite wedges. I still use the 60 and have two brand new backups. Really like the heel relief and shape of the head.”

Orlimar Lou Ortiz signature. Could be influenced by the number of pros, from Miller to ChiChi, Player and Snead, I witnessed entering Lou’s shop for a little ‘custom grind’.

I’ve never been consistent with a lob wedge but that 56 sand wedge he built was best I ever owned. Somehow it worked in wet packed firm sand and dry white fluffy sand with equal competence.

Under the new groove rules, the Muira K-grind 57* is nearly as versatile in various sand conditions and the Mizuno T22 47* and a 52* are brilliant once the grooves have 8-10 rounds in them. Brand new they are incredible spinners but unfortunately they also shred ball cover.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
