TaylorMade Stealth irons vs P790 – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing TaylorMade’s Stealth and P790 irons. WRXer ‘Lefty87’ is currently playing the brand’s P790 irons but is very tempted to move to the Stealth clubs, kicking off the thread saying:
“I haven’t had a chance to hit the Stealth irons yet, and I didn’t think I’d want to, but the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. I’m currently gaming the P790s. They are great irons for what they are, and they offer great performance for the package, but I’m curious how the Stealth irons compare. Is there enough to separate the two…
Is the forgiveness THAT much better? I’m a sweeper, and my miss is low towards the toe. Thin shots are my weakness. Obviously, they’ll be a bit longer due to the lofts. Any input is appreciated.”
And our members have been sharing their opinions in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Lobber: “Ego says 790s. Performance says Stealth. That’s my experience. Your mileage may vary. Both are excellent, but for me, Stealth is outstanding.”
- BottleCap: “Took a look at the Stealth this weekend at a shop, and it’s way bigger than than the 790 in-person and has lots of offset compared to the 790.”
- bvanlieu: “Stealth is the new kid on the block, but the 790s do quite well a groove or two low. It’s going to come down to either your personal testing results or simply visual. The Stealth, to me, was a good feeling club for its category, but I would call it a bit chunky for my eye. Could I game it? Sure I adapt, but I would not choose to game it as the 790s provide enough for me forgiveness, and I prefer more traditional lofts based on my SS. If you react better to the Stealth (and I have a friend who swings a bit slower than I do and just moved into the Stealth from 2 years of 790s) it may be the ticket for you. He saw better distance via the tech for his speeds. Lower loft, still elevated the ball enough, yadda yadda.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
