If you could play engineer for a day, what irons would you build? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing their dream irons. WRXer ‘The Mad Bomber’ asks, “if you could play engineer for a day, what would you build?” and kicks off the thread with his vision, saying:
“I’d basically build my MP-5s, but with the copper underlay in the new sticks. Would love to hear some ideas from actual golfers on here.”
And our members have been sharing their dream irons in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Jam01: “T300 irons, but with a “Ping G25 or 30ish” finish instead of the shiny chrome. Mostly for durability.”
- Vlade15: “I would go with a set of Apex MB21 blades, but I would want them with the cobra black finish and a colored accent screw in the back – red or blue – and pair them up with some X7 shafts with a jumbo grip, and I am good to go!”
- Maroon_19: “These (Photo above). Got a chance to hit the 7 iron last year. Man…”
- m3fuz: “A more forgiving 690MB or MP33 in satin or matte. Slightly longer blade length. Keep the feel, and add in some forgiveness. Then toss in my i110s. That would be perfect (for me).”
- Crouse99: “If we’re dreaming, I would build a set of muscle backs with a thin top line and sole but more offset than most would like. And I would make the sole out of some exotic, probably doesn’t exist heavy metal that would dramatically lower the center of gravity to promote a high launch.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
