In our forums, our members have been discussing wedges. WRXer ‘Eazy Mac’ has moved to Denver and is struggling with his wedges with the firmer, dryer turf. He kicks off the thread by saying:

“Just moved out to Denver from Northern Virginia. I was used to playing on fluffy wet grass a lot, and my CBX2 wedges worked great for that, but everything from chipping to 30-50 yard shots never gave me much trouble. 

I’ve played a few rounds out here and am having a lot of trouble chipping and hitting those half shots with the CBX2s. Feels like I’m hitting them fat, but the club skips off the ground, and contact is thin; not able to clip the ball clean like I used to. The bounces for my 50, 54, 58 are all 10-12 degrees, and I’m wondering if I should look into some with a lower bounce instead.

Thoughts? Any technique for hitting off turf like this with mid-high bounce wedges?”

• hdb27: “Denver native here, welcome home. Here I play a set gap wedge with 10 degrees of bounce, and then sand and lob are 12 and 8; best in Colorado to have a few different options, so I go with a high low combo so I can have some variance, all 12 will hurt you on Colorado turf.”
• Nixhex524: “For lower bounce wedges, I really liked the Mizuno T20, and I am sure the T22 are just as good. Lower bounce but a little bit of a wider sole which I think helps them feel like they have a little more.”
• cgasucks: “Having a high bounce wedge on firm turf would be no problem if your AOA is steep (in your case, it isn’t, which is a good thing). I think you should upgrade to lower bounce wedges. In the meantime, why don’t you open the face of your PW and make those same shots? The bounce on PWs are generally low and will make it slide under the ball no problem, just address it a few inches behind it with that open face and chip and pitch away. When I practice chipping, I usually practice off the worst lies possible (bare lies, ground under repair), and that’s how I do it. Makes it stupid easy when playing off fluffier lies when playing for real.”
