Should I add a 7-wood? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been going in deep on 7-woods. WRXer ‘PilotSports’ is the latest of our members to consider adding one to their bag and kicks off the thread saying:
“I’m starting to gear up for the season and am contemplating a change at the top of my bag. Currently I carry Driver, 3W (13.5 degrees), 5W (18 degrees) and 4H (22 degrees).
The 5W quickly became my favorite club in the bag when I added it last year, which got me thinking – should I replace the 4H with a 7W? I’d appreciate everyone’s opinion, particularly those that have the 3W/5W/7W setup. How do you like it? Thanks a lot!”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Fairway14: “For some players 7-wood is good; for others, the club produces too high spinning high trajectory shots which make consistent distance control too much of a challenge.”
- bogeyman71: “I love my G425 7 wood also. One of my favorite clubs to manipulate shots with. I can hit it both high and low and work shots both left and right.”
- hunterbrown: “7W is great. I gave it a shot lost season but its not as versatile as I thought it might be, it was replacing a ZX 3 iron that went decently high, and I could use it off the tee; that’s where I lost the 7W. It would get eaten up above the trees, which is a good problem if it’s going too high into greens but not off the tee.”
- QuigleyDU: “I am very pro 7 wood. I love that club. The 21 degree UW as others have said is another great option.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
