What do you look for in your wedge shafts? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing wedge shafts. WRXer ‘HeadCase59’ kicks off the thread, saying:
“Putting together my bag for the season. I got fit for some Mizuno Pro 223’s 6-AW with Project X 6.5. Most likely, I’ll go with a Project X 6.5 in my sand wedge, and I have no idea what I want to go with in my 60 degree. I do not hit full shots with the lob wedge. Basically use it around the greens for chips and flop shots only.
What do you play in your lob wedge, and why do you play it? For that matter even though I will most likely play a Project X 6.5 in my sand wedge, what do you play in your sand wedge and why?”
And our members have been responding in their numbers in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- ZdTallan: “I play project x 6.5’s in 4-P, and in my 50* and 55* (56* bent one strong). I use a 6.0 in my 60* and have used 6.5 in the past in the lob wedge. I can’t necessarily feel the 5 grams or whatever it is, and I’ve seen negligible differences, but I liked them both. Just more stable to me than the wedge flex that comes in Vokeys.”
- Phizzy30: “I like my wedges to be versatile which is why I have the lower launching and spinning KBS 610 in my 54* and the higher launching and spinning KBS Tour in my 58*.”
- R5Two: “X100ti same as irons. I spin it too much, so these help.”
- Ephemerlol: “KBS Tour 120 in irons, s400 in wedges. I hit a lot of partial wedges, so I like a little heft. I also tried Tour 130 8i shafts; the s400 spin more and launch lower.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
