Firmer forged irons? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing firmer forged irons. WRXer ‘Bbspeer’ is on the hunt for a new set of clubs that don’t have a soft feel, kicking off the thread by saying:
“Looking for recommendations for forged irons to try, as I’ve realized that I prefer “firm” feeling over “soft”. To me, I describe firm as (heavy, solid, pure, dense) as opposed to soft which feels (light, hollow, mushy). Think T100 vs ZX7. Preferably players CB or MB with a touch of forgiveness.”
And our members have been sharing their top picks in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- PEI_Golfer: “Although you said you want to move away from Titleist, have you hit the 620s as they pretty much fit the bill for newer released irons (beautiful looking clubs). Personal opinion, but I’ve usually found TM CB’s to be on the ‘firmer’ side as well, but haven’t played a set since the ’14s and only tested some out.”
- rainkingjr: “Get a set of Maltby TE forged or DBMs. Forged out of 1035. Plenty of forgiveness, and they fit the bill as far as the feel you are after. Price is amazing as well.”
- Cruisin1966: “If I had a recommendation to make, it would be the P7TW’s, or something Miura (TC201, MB101).”
- spartyjeff: “IMO shaft plays a role in this as well. The stiffer more boards shaft is going to make you feel it in your hands a bit more. BUT I loved my Bridgestone J33’s that were forged. A little bit firmer, but the man did they feel good. Soun makes no difference to me, it’s all about feel.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
