What is your 7-wood setup and why? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing their 7-wood setups. WRXer ‘Mackepa’ is currently testing a couple of 7-woods and kicks off the thread saying:
“I’m tinkering with a couple 7-woods in hopes of having something I can hit high and soft from 220+. I think by far I’ve liked the Ping G425 7 wood the best. The lowest loft setting really opens the face and gives me a great look at address.
Biggest issue I’ve found is that most manufacturers are going to produce 7-woods with a little more upright lie angle and shut face, which makes sense for the masses. Have you played around with higher lofted fairway woods, and what did you go with?”
And our members have been sharing their experiences with their 7-woods in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- glm: “Mine had been in the bag for about 10 years. It’s not going anywhere. Ping G20, 21 degrees.”
- SC-TX 88: “I just moved into a 7-wood to try and better fill the spot between 3 wood and 4 iron. I had been playing a P770 3 iron built as more of a driving iron with a Nippon GOST shaft. I went with the TSI2 7 wood, turn down to 20.75 with the Tensei AV Raw White 85 TX 2.0 (tipped at 1.5” and just playing standard Titleist length). It’s been the easiest to hit club I’ve ever owned. I bought it for a 240 shot, and it does exactly that; I can throw it up in the air and land and hold a green.”
- matt70296: “TaylorMade SIM Max 7 wood with a Diamana BF 70X. Absolutely love it. High launching 235-yard club for me. Driver SS is around 113-115 when it’s not Chicago winter.”
- dmeeksDC: “I only play adjustable 7-woods due to so many being set up to hook in stock configurations. Mine is a 215-220 club. The key for me was getting a stiff, lower torque shaft since I did not want to boost launch. Currently have two, a Cobra F9 with an Aldila RIP Phenom 80 stiff and a Callaway Epic Flash with a Diamana Kai’li 80 stiff (the OG Kai’li). I can play them interchangeably. The Cobra is better on ragged golf courses. Any lie, and it’s fine.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
