Srixon ZX7 vs Mizuno Pro 223 irons – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing and contrasting Srixon’s ZX7 irons and Mizuno’s Pro 223 irons. WRXer ‘Casey_0507’ is looking for an in-depth comparison between the two heads, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and experiences with both irons in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Cactus Jack: “In my hands the irons feel very different. The ZX7s have an almost dense heavy feeling strike similar to a Muria, while the 223s felt fast and extremely soft with all the classic Mizuno DNA one can handle. Within a few swings with each club you’ll likely have a clear cut favorite.”
  • JoeFrigo: “I’ve got both 223’s and zx7’s on order… From what I remember, when I hit both, 223’s had slightly faster ball speed. Both were comparable spin. ZX7’s have a thicker topline.”
  • wam78: “I’ve been a Mizuno fanboy for a long time. Since I played mp14’s in the late 90’s right out of high school. Off and on love affair with them. Whenever they come out with a new iron release, they always pique my interest. I have not hit the 223 yet, but I will in the very near future. Very interested to see the looks at address and see the numbers and ball flight. However, this is my first time playing Srixon (zx7’s), and man have I been impressed. The feel is everything I want from an iron in this category. Very forgiving, sole design really works for my delivery. My numbers are absolutely spot on. They allow me to play the ball I want to play without too much or too little spin. Just a fantastic iron!”
  • kwainio: “I just did a fitting this week. At address they both look very similar, enough so that I didn’t really have a preference. The 223s definitely felt hotter off the face, spun somewhere around 200-300rpms less, but overall pretty negligible. I ended up going 223s.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
