Gapping at the top of the bag for longer hitters – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing gapping at the top of the bag for longer hitters. WRXer ‘Drvrwedge’ kicks off the thread, saying
“So for my longer hitter out there wondering how you properly gap the top of your bag. I currently have a G425 Max 3w that I carry about 275 off the tee and Mavrik SZ 5w that I hit carry 250ish, but I find I have a decent gap between my 4i and 5w and find it difficult to really take a lot off the 5w if needed. I’ve been thinking about going to a 4w or HL 3w and maybe a 20-degree hybrid or 7w.
I rarely play courses over 7200, so if I could get 260 out of a 4w off the tee that’s plenty. Wondering what others are doing.”
And our members have been sharing their advice and different strategies in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Cactus Jack: “I play a G425 3 wood followed by a G425 7 wood turned down a degree. I don’t take anything off the 3 wood, and if I can’t hit my target with a 7 wood I’m laying up.”
- Drewhill44: “Adding a 3 hybrid might be the simple solution. Switching out your 3 & 5 wood for a 4 & 7 wood could be another option.”
- kasting333: “I have the same issue as OP constantly switching things up at the top of my bag. I’m never playing long courses, and 3 wood seems more and more unnecessary, but I can’t seem to go against the norm and drop it from the bag.”
- PixlPutterman: “Depending on the launch window you are looking for I would get a 2 or 3 driving iron or hybrid. I go driver – 4 wood – 2 driving iron, and while there are still gaps between them, I just RARELY find myself in a scenario needing to fill said gaps, let alone the risk-reward that far our from the green for me, simply isn’t worth it.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
