‘Changed drivers and it made a difference’ – GolfWRXers discuss

- rooski: “I completely redid my (quite old) bag this year and went from the Nike Covert 2.0 Tour to the RadSpeed. Made a pretty significant difference in forgiveness, partially the head, partially spending lots of time getting shaft/length/swing weight correct, which I’ve never paid attention to before. I can hit it exactly as far with either driver though, and last time I picked up a Callaway Big Bertha in titanium, I also hit it just as far as those two for the most part. The biggest differences between new and old are forgiveness, not so much distance.”
- Billfitz: “I went from a Taylor Made M1 to a Cleveland Launcher HB. The distance is the same, but the Cleveland is far more forgiving. I really have to mess up to slice or hook with it, but I’m still able to work a controlled fade or draw at will. What makes it a real win-win is it’s priced around $150 less than most drivers. The new XL Lite is very similar.”
- TupperWolf: “I’m sure it’s down to the shaft, but my Mavrik SZ is the driver I never thought actually existed. I’ve seen good drivers of the ball, and I’ve hit the occasional good drives, but I’ve never consistently hit the ball long and straight. I recently hit 13/14 fairways when my previous average was 4-5. I literally just aim and swing as hard as I want, and it goes straight. I can’t wait to see how it helps my game over the next few rounds. Prior to this, I was playing an old 910D2, and I tried a TEE C721, great head, but the shaft didn’t work for me.”
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
