How much do you spend on equipment each year? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing their annual equipment spending habits. WRXer ‘Shanker84′ says he has spent far too much over the past few years and wants to see if fellow members’ spending is comparable – with plenty of different buying strategies displayed.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- MtlJeff: “On average now, maybe 2000-3000$ Canadian. I’ll get a new driver every year plus a hybrid or 3 wood usually. Every couple of years new irons. It probably averages out to 2000-2500.”
- MelloYello: “It’s fair to say I’ll spend a minimum of about $500 updating something in a given year. The more I play, the more likely it is I spend money tweaking something. Last year I played a lot. By the end of the year, I had swapped driver and irons. This year, I’m thinking about my 3w and my wedges. Not sure either will get replaced, though.”
- ChipNRun: “Every four years or so, I will spend maybe $600 on clubs. In between, it’s maybe $150-200 or so for a new club or wedge. But, I can usually get a little trade-in or resale $$ for the item replaced. This summer, I will need to replace a rangefinder I lost at a local amateur event – no one turned it in.”
- Haber: “This year has been an anomaly. Up until a month ago, nothing in my bag was replaced. The lefty phantom x5.5 changed that. I’m a recovering club addict. I went through 4 sets of irons and 3 drivers in the 2 years prior. I’d consider only $600 this year a win… the ping i59’s do look reallllly nice, though.”

Equipment
Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
