What GolfWRXers are saying about a tee height rollback

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the validity of a potential tee height rollback. WRXer ‘Ryan84’ makes a case for shortening tees to curb distance in the game, saying

“Why has limiting tee height not gained more traction in the distance debate? While players are obviously much faster, they are optimizing their launch and spin so much with these massive tees.

I remember in the Payne Valley event, JT brought out his “bomber tee”, which was 4+ inches, and I know Bryson uses a massive one as well. I imagine a max 1″ tee height or something like that would not allow someone like Bryson to be using a 4-degree driver.

Additionally, this would have the least amount of impact on the OEMs, golf in general, and is easy to implement. Not a bad place to start”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the idea in our forum – with the vast majority believing a rollback of any kind is unnecessary.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • ChipNRun: “Short tees rule would be about as effective as countermeasures against computer hackers. Might be effective for a few months, but then some pro or some tour van guy would come up with a way around it (like shallow-headed drivers others have mentioned).”
  • DFS PFD: “Let’s just let them play; the Tour does not need more regulation at this point to attract new golfers and grow the game.”
  • b.mattay: “Would make no difference. If I set up my driver a little different spec-wise, I can hit it just as far at 1-2 down as I can at 2-3 up.”

I have a better idea: sand tees only, and you can only use so much sand per tee.

People chewing up their $600 driver whacking a pile of sand on every tee. Yeah, right.

Then we would have to reduce the overall size and height of the driver with a 1 inch tee.

    Persimmon anyone!?

    Band-aid over a bullet hole.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
