Vokey Wedge Works adds limited edition 60B to lineup

Published

on

Inspired by the extremely popular M grind, Bob Vokey is introducing the new limited edition 60B—created for golfers who love the versatility of the M grind but would prefer a lower bounce option.

“This wedge suits the player with high speed and is precise in their delivery,” says Aaron Dill. “Firm conditions and lightly sanded bunkers are the perfect conditions for the 60B.”

The B grind was developed by reducing the forward bounce and camber of the M and moving it further away from the leading edge. Side by side golfer will notice that the 60B has a flatter front section compared to the M and with that also has less visual heel and toe relief—while still maintaining extreme versatility. The end result is the 60B has four degrees of effective bounce versus the effective 8 degrees of the 60M.

SM8 Wedge Technology refresher

Each and every single Vokey wedge goes through a full grooves inspection to ensure they are cut with a level of precision that leads the industry to produce maximum spin and shot control. After that micro-grooves are cut in between the spin milled grooves to maximize spin on partial shots.

The Vokey Spin Milled groove design has not changed since Vokey began offering variable depth and width designs depending on loft. Tolerances continue to get pushed, but since the design was already at the limit, it’s now more about being able to replicate rather than search for an elusive few hundred RPM.

When talking about those extra RPMs gained by potential tool and radius changes, Titleist likes to use the analogy of a pencil. You can sharpen a pencil to an absolute point, but the first thing you are going to notice when you start to use that pencil is how quickly that extremely sharp point dulls back to a “standard” sharpness. This relates directly to groove radius and Titleist’s philosophy to offer maximum spin for the life of the wedge, not just those first five rounds of golf, because unlike PGA Tour players, regular golfers can’t just wander into a tour van and ask for a new lob wedge every week.

Pricing and availability

Like other wedges included in the Wedge Works program, the 60B can be customized, including personalized stamping in up to 10 characters and one of 12 paint fill colors. Customers also have the opportunity of choosing between a selection of shafts, grips, shaft bands, and ferrules.

The 60B comes in the Tour Chrome finish and is available now from WedgeWorks on Vokey.com starting at $250.

The L grind is a 60.04…how is the B different from L? $250 for a chrome wedge, shank!

Agree wedge pricing has gotten out of hand. Lot’s of smaller conpanies out their with decent pricing and good products though: hogan, haywood, sub70. New callaway cb wedges aren’t too bad either.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
