Senior trying to decide on these two drivers – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been talking drivers for senior players. WRXer ‘jjfcpa’ isn’t entirely sure he’ll switch drivers, but kicks off the thread, saying
“I’m a senior golfer with a decent swing, although understandably slow. I am currently playing a Mavrik standard 10.5 driver that I can generally hit 75% of the fairways. I’m trying to decide on an Epic Speed Max and the Big Bertha 21.”
And our members have been sharing their advice in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Davidv: “I would definitely pick the Epic Speed Max over the Big Bertha 21, but in your case, I would probably stick with the
- Mavrik. It seems to be working for you.”
- TigerInTheWoods: “If you’re actually hitting 75% of fairways with decent distance I’d not be giving that up… Max looks from tests like it will spin more than the Mavrik. The standard Mavrik was one of the best drivers I tested last year.”
- EBE-Golfin: “Do not limit your options. For sure if you’re wanting more distance, trajectory (height) and maintain a fairway finding driver… The new PING G425 MAX is a must demo. I’m 64, still have a good swing. Just have lost some clubhead speed with the age. I have demoed the new G425 outdoors twice. No trackman numbers but it’s amazing; straight, long, all the height you want with the stock shaft selections and the 2 degree loft adjustment. AND it’s still long on off-center strikes. I have a fitting tomorrow and will get trackman numbers to make the optimal purchase. I haven’t been this optimistic about a game-changing driver in years.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
