‘Are Ping’s i3 OS irons a good, cheap set for a high handicapper?’ – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether Ping’s i3 OS irons are a good set of clubs for a high handicapper. WRXer ‘IndyGopher’ puts the question out there, saying:

“Hey all…great forum. Long story short (longer story below), I’m a high handicapper who’s wondering if Ping i3 OS are a decent used set for somebody looking for a change but not wanting to invest much.”

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BCULAW: “I bought my brother a set of i3 OS for $75 when he started playing golf a few years back. He loves them, and every time I play with him and hit his I wonder why I don’t play them. Great set that I would recommend to anyone. Go for it. If they are your specs, I think you will love them. That is, until you realize that you are a Ping player for life and shell out $ for the latest G series!”
  • cgasucks: “The i3s are a great iron (both regular and O/S). I remember when I started golfing and the first time I went to a golf store the i3s were one of the first irons I’ve ever saw for sale as they’re part of their current line up at the time. If possible, I suggest you check the loft and lies on the O/S before you buy them just to check that they fit your specs and if you do, go grab them. Pings made in those days were built like tanks and will last you a very long time.”
  • T Creer: “Great option for a beginner through avid golfer. They have a fair amount of off-set for the avid player but helps the new guys immensely.”
  • mantan: “One of the guys on our golf trip has played the i3 OS for almost 20 years…and takes our money every single year. Good sticks.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
