What’s your most challenging iron gap, and how do you breach it? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing ways to fill iron gaps in their bag. WRXer ‘pktaske’ kicks off the thread, saying:
“Off eBay, I recently got a combo set of Apex 19 (5-8) and Apex 19 Pro (8-A). I was wondering why the guy had two 8 irons, and after a single round I found out. That extra 8 iron really fills in that gap nicely. Now I get that great Pro feel with the short irons with the added forgiveness of the standard Apex.
Does anyone else have to use a ‘gap’ club to fill in any sequence between their 3 and PW? Choke up on a lower lofted iron? Modified swing speed?”
And our members have been revealing their secrets in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- RedKloud: “The iron gap I have is because I can’t hit anything longer than my 6I (26*). So I use hybrids at 23* and 20*.”
- MattM97: “That 75-100 yard shot I have nothing for and really best way to breach it is never hit into that situation if possible. Then again, easier said than done at times.”
- MellowYellow: “I’ll hit a 46-47 degree PW about 135 while only hitting a 56o Sw about 105 so for me, it’s imperative to have a 50-52 degree GW which will go about 120. On the top end, I’m hitting my 25 degree 5i about 190-195 carry and my 21 degree 7w about 220 carry, so I’ll stick a 21-22 degree iron or hybrid in there depending on what shots I think I need. Iron is preferable off the tee, hybrid off the deck.”
- Jwin323: “I did the opposite of what most manufacturers are doing. I have a 4 degree gap on the short irons and a 5 degree gap in the mid irons. Gives me a consistent 13-14 yard carry gapping.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
