How long until you give up on a club? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing the length of time until they give up on a club. WRXer ‘sniff’ kicks off the discussion saying:
“Got a new driver and I love it….g400 Max. I knew from the first three range ballls it was a keeper.
It got me to thinking how quickly I make a decision on whether a club is going to work out.
Driver- like above, I know within a few balls whether it’s going to stay…value accuracy over crazy distance
Fairway woods- tend to be more patient as I primarily use off the deck so looking for a particular distance….not more distance
Hybrid- versatility rules for me so when I find one I rarely look around…safest spot in the bag
Irons- I give irons a little more time than the driver spot. I know when they will not work during a range session….and will give them a season if they make it past the range
Putter- haven’t changed in 4 years…and won’t unless mine breaks.”
And our members have been sharing the length of time it takes them to make up their mind on a new club.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- 95124hacker: “After 3 bad shots (OB, hazard, topped, chunked, poor distance/direction control) within 3 consecutive rounds. Not a hard rule, but generally speaking…”
- Warrick: “18 holes usually tells me enough, sold many drivers and fwy woods after 18.”
- forrester_fire: “Usually a few rounds, range sessions, or short game practice sessions.”
- Albatross85: “10 swings, usually less.”
- Chadwickdog: “Sometimes it’s one shot, sometimes it’s five rounds. Depends on the club.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
