Smaller grip resulting in better putting? – GolfWRXers have their say

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether using a smaller grip can result in better putting on the greens. WRXer ‘SkrappyHacker1’ kicks off the conversation saying:

“I had a Pure midsize grip on my putter (Sigma Tyne H) for about 30 rounds. It felt great at first, but I felt like I was losing some speed control and feedback, especially on putts 10 feet in. So I recently switched back to the Pure classic standard size grip, and for the last 3 rounds I got the feel back into my hands, and it feels like I have a lot more speed control on those shorter putts.

I’m done with the bigger putter grip fad. It is definitely not for everyone. Has anyone switched from big to standard and been much happier with your putting?”

And our members have been having their say on the subject in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • jwhite86: “I use the Scotty Studio Design grip. It’s the skinniest grip I can find, and I love it. I feel like I have much better control. I don’t like SS grips on putters, I lose feel.”
  • Roryr4Pres: “I’m the opposite, switch all my small grips to mid slim 3.0 SuperStrokes. It feels really comfortable in my hands. I’m a tempo putter that uses my shoulders more than a feel putter that uses their wrists.”
  • Z1ggy16: “I’m all about the Tour Trad/Pistolero grip. The biggest I can use before I start to lose feel and control is something like a Superstroke GTR 1.0. Absolutely hated the big fat grip that came stock on the Stroke Lab… Immediately switched the grip and shaft out for a Tour Traditional grip and a regular 125g putter shaft.”
  • brew4eagle: “I’ve never liked fat/SuperStroke grips. Recently switched to this grip (above), it’s tiny, and it’s amazing…”
  • RobotDoctor: “The Salty Mid Plus feels excellent. There is something about the cork. I used a course file to rough up the surface a bit, and it feels somewhat like suede. The grip is light, 37g. I wanted it to add swing weight to my putter compared to a standard 57g-60g grip. Any grip heavier I have never liked.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
