What GolfWRXers are saying about the clubs they bought ‘because a pro used them’

Published

@pgagolfchat

In our forums, our members have been discussing the clubs they specifically purchased after seeing a pro use them. Our very own Ryan Barath created the interesting topic and kicked it off with his homage to Jason Dufner:

“I just bought a Titleist 915F 21° to re-shaft because Jason Dufner is still using one and I figured since I don’t really get along with hybrids I should try out a modern 7 wood. The last one I had was an old Callaway BB04 with a steel shaft when I was a teenager. Fingers crossed it works for me as well as it works for Duff!”

And our members have been getting involved letting each other know the clubs they couldn’t resist after seeing a tour pro use them.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • fillwelix: “I (and many others) bought the spider tour red in that summer of 2017. Holy moly that was a popular putter that year.”
  • mxskier: “Picked up a sim hybrid partially cause Rory and DJ put it into play. I was getting along well with 3/5 wood combo, but the 5W was going farther than I wanted related to my 4i. I was torn about what to put there, and once I saw those guys put a hybrid into play, I figured it was worth a shot.”
  • GolfingFanatic: “Red Spider (Day). SIM Max hybrid (Rory). Titleist 680s (Adam). PM Grind wedge (Phil). Cleveland Classic 290 T3 (Vijay). OG Ping Anser (Seve).”
  • NoTalentLefty: “Only irons I ever bought because of a name were my Nicklaus N1 irons.”
  • Nudga: “I brought and still own Makser Tw400 fairways 3+ & 5 due to Jose Maria Olazabal being associated with the brand although I’m not 100% he used that model. Nice clean looking woods. I also have a WhiteHot #2, but Steve Sticker had no influence on that one.”
  • DFS PSD: “Nike VR Pro II irons…”
  • Boricua Golf: “VR Nike blades ‘TW’ stamp (still have), Callaway TA Prototypes (still have) cause of Phil, I am all Ping now (thanks to an LPGA player that vouched for me), met a few staff player and was hooked…I have a TW Scotty Re Dot (GSS 009) that I hardly ever use (mostly a collectible) being afraid that it will get snatched by a hater!!!, lots of TW shoes and FJ shoes just because some of my favorite players use them…just to mention a few.”

Ah yes, the stupid things we do because we think it will be better with the clubs our favorite Pro uses. We know we are just as good as them and we need to have the clubs to prove it. After all, it is the club and not the player.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
