The drivers and shafts GolfWRXers with a 5-10 handicap are playing
In our forums, our members have been going in-depth on the subject of drivers and driver shafts. WRXer ‘Bushwood Country Club’ kicks off the discussion with his current weapon of choice: “Ping G410 LST, 10.5 Degree, Mitsubishi Tensei Pro Orange, 60G”, and WRXers in the 5 to 10 handicap bracket have been sharing their perfect pairing in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Flyers99: “I haven’t found anything to beat my PING G400 with Veylix Arcane shaft.”
- scooterhd2: “Ping G410 plus, 9 degrees turned to 10. Tensei Pro Orange 60S. Has been an absolute fairway finder for me. Really feel confident on the tee box for the first time. Feel like I can pick what side of the fairway I want to be to on to set up the approach versus just aiming down the middle and hoping things go okay.”
- craz-e: “I would probably say I am roughly a 5 now after a few bad rounds. Currently playing SIM with the Hzrdus smoke green.”
- Haber: “7.3 playing a 10.5 sim max with a AD GP 6S. Waiting on a 6X to arrive as well for some testing but liking the flight I am getting with this set up now.”
- JakeW13: “Driver: Ping G410+, 9 Degrees Flat setting, Weight in Toe. Shaft: Accra TZ5 65 M5. This driver has been absolute money for me. I play with one of the better golfers in the state of Massachusetts, and he swings the club about 3-5mph faster than me, but I have consistently outdriven him due to how optimal this Ping driver has been for me. I’m sitting around 111-114 swing speed, average spin rate around 2,200 and am averaging a 290 carry. Just bought a Ventus Black 6x with TM tip, so I’m going to try testing a SIM setup. I’d like to configure SIM to be a default fade shot shape because I’d love to eliminate the left side of the course. I’m thinking 10.5* tuned down to 8.5 or 9.5, with weight in toe.”
- LHGolf4: “8.3 right now, Cobra F9 with HZRDUS Smoke 60 stiff set to 10.5 degrees.”
- jcorna01: “Currently an 8 with a new baby, usually closer to 6. PING G400 Max with the stock stiff Alta. Trackman tells me that I’m leaving yards on the table, but the amount of confidence I have with it motivates me to stay put. I’m not playing 7,000-yard courses. I might give the next PING driver a waggle.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
