Today from the Forums: “Raw Wedges”

Published

on

Today from the Forums, we take a look at a discussion on raw wedges. WRXer, Mainehacker21 asks fellow members if raw wedges “last a lot less time than finished?” and if “there’s a point where they can rust past being usable?”, and our members have been having their say on the subject.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • billybaroo: “Depends on the climate where you live. Somewhere dry will have less of an impact, while a moister or marine environment will accelerate the effect. I have two raw wedges; one is a decade-plus old, I wipe it down after every shot, it gets kept in a dry environment, and the club is still plenty usable. If you leave it for years in a moist environment, yes it will rust, but it would be years of total neglect before it becomes unplayable or un-salvageable.”
  • Ger21: “Raw steel is softer than chrome plating, so raw wedges will scratch and scuff more than chrome, and potentially wear faster. But if you keep them clean, you should easily get 10 years or more out of them at 12 rounds/year. If you don’t want them to rust, clean and oil them after each round.”
  • Jack_H: “They actually last much longer. Most people change when chrome face wears off. Grooves are usually good well past that. So raw you can keep going without the appearance of “ worn out “. CLR or white vinegar will also make raw look new again in a short time.”
  • scott_Donald: “To me, Raw wedges seem to come with so many theories, and to me, I have no idea what is the truth. Some folk intentionally rust their wedges; others say that harms them. Some folk say you get more spin; others say don’t be stupid. Artisan are verdant slating on three wedges, think they have only done one set, and that was as a favour. My last two sets have been raw! and I think most wedges I have bought myself have been Raw over the years.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
