Today from the Forums: “Something between a game improvement and players iron?”
Today from the Forums we take a look at irons somewhere between a game improvement and a players option. WRXer, NorthTXGolf is currently considering plumping for TaylorMade’s P790 irons, or Sub70’s 699’s and our members have been having their say on what might be the best course of action for NorthTXGolf.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- hackysack: “I went through the same search recently. I hit the 790s, Mizuno HMB and jpx forged but ultimately settled on the Callaway apex forged. I took them out for their first hit today, and the feel is just beautiful. Very very happy with them. The 790a just didn’t have the same feel to me.”
- Golf64: “Players distance sounds like what you are looking for?! i500, P790, 585, 919F, HMB, T200, D7forged, Apex/Pro, King tec., are places to start.”
- Metzexpress4: “I was between the 790s and the 919 forged. I was a little longer with the 790s but my dispersion was much tighter with the 919’s. Pulled the trigger on the 919’s with the KBS C taper shaft and I have not been disappointed. Swings that leave a little to be desired still produce a very playable next shot without giving up distance. Highly recommend the 919 forged!”
- golfjam: “Tried them all and really liked Mizuno 919 Hot Metal Pro.”
- Hookasauras Rex: “I own two sets in this category – p790 and Cobra Forged Tec Black. I really like both. I do like the shaft set up in the 790s better, so those get more play. However, both are great irons.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
