Honma has unveiled its two new iron sets for 2020—the TR20V and TR20P.

The TR20V is a players iron that is designed to deliver true players distance, while the TR20P is a players distance iron which aims to provide golfers with game improvement playability.

Honma’s TR20V irons are forged from soft S20C carbon steel with a modern cavity back design, which aims to offer easy to launch performance with shot control.

Built with a player-preferred blade length and topline, the irons also feature a recessed, electroform Honma mole logo in the cavity for a throwback to the brand’s previous forged iron models.

The TR20P irons feature a forged S35C steel body with an L cup face designed for maximum ball speed.

A tungsten-weighted pocket cavity seeks to create speed-enhancing forgiveness and a low center of gravity for higher launch and longer carry distance in Honma’s TR20P irons. At the same time, the common design language aims to allow golfers to blend TR20V and P irons into an ideal set.

Speaking on the new iron sets, Honma Vice President of Global Product Chris McGinley stated

“The combination of Honma hand-crafted looks with tour level performance, modern constructions and expert designs provide a blend of looks, sound and feel that golfers will love.”

Honma’s TR20P and TR20V irons are offered with VIZARD TR20 85 graphite and Nippon Modus 105 shafts as a standard option. The shafts are designed with a stiffer tip section aimed to provide excellent trajectory control and are built with ascending weight—the clubs are designed to increase speed with the longer irons and increase control with the shorter irons.

An additional TR20B iron set is currently in development with prototypes already in play by Honma ambassador Justin Rose and will be available for fitting and at retail this summer, according to the company.

The TR20V and TR20P irons are available for fitting in February and at retail in March and cost $174.99/club with steel shafts or $199.99/club with graphite shafts.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
