Forum Thread of the Day: “Your last ever set of irons?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Nickc who asks fellow WRXers what they would choose if their next set of irons were the last clubs they could use. Some of our members mention a range of different irons which they would love to splash out on, while others choose between a set of clubs already in their possession.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • cfasucks: “If I had only 1 set to play with for the rest of my life it would probably be my 845s. They are great feeling and forgiving when I’m not at the top of my game, and they’re built like tanks.”
  • kekoa: “At this point, I’d have to choose Seven MB’s. At a price tag of about $4,000 4-PW I wouldn’t be able to afford another set.”
  • bodhi555: “That would be my VR Pros, as they do everything I need an iron to do. Feel awesome, let me get away with not being precisely on the centre of the face, look great and seem to go as far as some distance irons I’ve tried.”
  • Lumberjack627: “Think I’m going to get 790s, and that would be it for me.”

Wilson staff Tour blades… they are sooooo soft. If i could get my hands on a set of Wilson FG 100 tours… I most likely would do that

After switching to single-length irons 3 years ago, I haven’t looked back. So….the set I have.

Hypothetical: Ping Single-Length G series (green dot). Perchance to dream…..

You could find a set on eBay used, reshaft with single length shafts and have bent to desired lie angle for under $350-$400! Go for it! Would be interesting and I bet they would perform!

I made a set of 750’s with recoil 110 shafts. I doubt I’ll ever make myself another set as these are flat perfect!!

Adams CMB forged cavity back blades with Nunchuk Xi shafts are the last irons, I will buy on ebay.

Taylormade P790. They look and feel like shovels to me now but I will appreciate them more when I’m 75 and upset that I can’t hit the ball as far as I did when I was 30.

Mizuno JPX 919 Forged and Ping ISI SS. Good shape, durable, and grooves will be fresh for another 50+ years. I will quit golf before ever lowering myself to keeping super game improvement bubblebutts in my bag.

the older I get the more forgiving my clubs will need to be.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
