Garmin Approach G80 (2019 PGA Show)

Published

on

A GolfWRX staffer called the Garmin Approach G80 the “best tech I saw today,” at the 2019 PGA Show Demo Day. High praise for the combined GPS, launch monitor, and skill-building unit from the long-time GPS and navigation technology provider.

The unit features an integrated launch monitor that displays clubhead speed, ball speed, smash factor, swing tempo and estimated distance, more than 41,000 detailed color golf course maps worldwide, and practice/game mode for skill testing and improvement.

The company describes the technology as “the first all-in-one premium GPS golf handheld with integrated launch monitor.”

With the variety of modes and Garmin Golfapp integration, it’s not difficult to see how the G80 can be a huge asset both on the range and on course.

It retails for $499.99.

You can watch more in-depth overview of the technology in the video from Garmin below.

If this thing puts out decent data, I ll buy it in a minute.
Guess we have to wait for tests comparing the data with trackman/gc quad

This, plus a “GameGolf” in the same device would be absolutely awesome. Just a full companion.

What is this unit actual measuring vs. what is it calculating? Most of these smaller units just measure one or two metrics and then “calculate” the rest.

Based on where its setup, sort of looks like the Swing Speed Radar setup vs being behind the ball. I’m guessing it measures clubhead speed and maybe ballspeed as well. Then calculates the rest based on club lofts that you input – sort of like the SC200?

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
