Forum Thread of the Day: “What are the best Maltby irons ever, and why?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from AbSWFPGA, who asked fellow GolfWRX members for their opinion on what Maltby irons they consider to be the best and why. Plenty of different Maltby irons get a mention, and the thread even inspired one of our members to pick up a set.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Shifty76: “This forum is bad for my wallet. Really had no desire to switch irons from the AP1s I bought a couple of years ago, but you buggers sold me on the Maltbys. In the process of buying a set of like-new 4-GW DBMs now…not even sure if I’ll hit the 4i as my Heavenwood covers that distance, but if I can hit it well enough maybe it’ll go in the bag on windy days.”
  • Perrkka: “I have only played the DBM. They are excellent. I put them together with Project-X 5.5 shafts. The result was great.”
  • Nat: “I’ve hit almost every Maltby iron since ’03. I have to agree on the DBM/TE/MO5 as the best. I currently play the KE4 Tour + which is a tad more forgiving, but not nearly as sexy looking. The TS2 is up there as well, clean look, very solid feel, just not enough to warrant the $ over my KE4 tour+.”
  • Sparky14: “I just picked up a DBM set. Even on graphite shafts, I’m shocked how harsh those heads feel. And being the ho that I am, I also picked up a set of Honma 737V irons on steel shafts, and they feel so much softer than the DBM. I’ve always loved the M05/TE line, so I’ll stick with the non-black Maltby versions.”

Macho golfers only buy big brand name clubs… and leave the junk brands to the losers.

Gearheads are not real golfers, they are only club collectors. They change their WITB yearly so they can list their WITB on the main forum for bragging and boolsh!t rights. Really pathetic.

How about reviewing BANG ( http://www.banggolf.com/ )golf clubs, particularly the drivers offered in 14-16-18 degree lofts… which is what most of the world’s golfers (and most WRX denizens) should be bagging…. not the low loft fantasy driver$$$…

Blasphemy! Wrxers all need 7.5 degree lofted drivers that are super low spin shafted with X flex low launch low spin drivers! And these still balloon too much! But that’s just to be expected with a 350 yard average drive. Uphill. Into a headwind. First tee. No warmup or stretching. Blindfolded.

…. and they all use 3 inch tees to swing up into the ball cause when they use 2 1/4 inch tees they get worm burners.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
