Fourteen introduces new TC-788 iron

Published

on

Fourteen Golf is trying to pack everything it can into a forged club. A compact cavity back that looks like an heir to the low-handicapper-focused TC-770, the TC-788 is forged from a solid block of S20C steel with no additional additives. The irons also feature a nickel chrome plated satin finish with stock Nippon NS Pro 950GH HT shafts.

Fourteen describes the 788 as a high ball speed, mid-to-low handicap players iron that uses “every technique possible to increase distance while still keep pliability in a one piece forging.” The TC-788 also fully optimizes center of gravity throughout the set based on each club’s loft. An undercut cavity allows Fourteen to deepen the COG.

Alex Schack, manager of media relations, says

“The difference in blade height between the 7 and 6 irons is more than 3mm. This creates an extremely dynamic CG change from the short irons to the long irons.”

Players will see a compact head shape with minimal offset at address. Likewise, when striking the ball, the TC-788s beveled trailing edge is apparent. It allows for optimal turf interaction and thinner overall clubhead feel. The MAP price is $1349.99 for a 4-PW set, and the clubs go on sale today, November 10.

Maltby TE forged irons at a quarter of the price for an equivalent clubhead:

Thick top line and these are way overpriced for what they are IMO.

Isn’t it interesting that with all the angles and dangles in the new stuff the EYE 2 perimeter weighting is still the best and simplest. Look and probably just like many earlier models from several mfgrs.

Is that feather emblem forged into the club or is it upset because I can’t tell.

Looks great at address, other than the usual thick top line. Guess it’s time to get used to that.

Please confirm it is “hot” forged. Also are the markings inside the cavity part of the forging or is it only a decorative metal plaque with the fine detailing that may not be achieved with a forging process?
Just asking because of the P-790 fake-forged cast steel body controversy. Thanks.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
