Sergio buys winning putter grip at Dick’s Sporting Goods

Published

on

PGA Tour players are waited on hand and foot by golf equipment companies, but sometimes they like to do things on their own. The most recent is example is Sergio Garcia, who purchased the putter grip he used to win the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store near Austin, Texas.

Garcia was in the area in early January, and he purchased a SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0 putter grip (green/white) from the company’s Bee Cave store. It had to be a thrill for the salesperson who helped Garcia; he assisted the nine-time PGA Tour winner in finding the right grip and then watched as the European Ryder Cup hero installed the grip himself.

“I picked that grip because it felt good and I wanted a round one with a weight plug on it,” Garcia said. “One of the guys in the golf area helped me find the right one and then he let me put it on myself. The green color caught my eye so I went with that one.”

Garcia was previously using SuperStroke’s Midnight Pistol GT 1.0 putter grip, which has a more angular shape.

The putter grip Garcia purchased sells for $34.99 and comes with a 50-gram CounterCore back weight, which SuperStroke says “engages larger muscles in the arms, shoulders and back” during the putting stroke.

Back in the 1970’s, there were no “Tour Vans” from the OEM’s to repair or modify clubs, so the players would seek out the nearest “off course” shop to get work done. In Akron, OH the players would go to Kosar Golf (an established golf shop since the early 1950’s). We all changed shafts, lenghtened / shortened, installed grips, did loft / lie work plus whatever other work they needed. At times there would be 10-12 players in at one time. Nearly all were great to work for, however there were a couple who could be…well, less than cordial. And we only accepted cash for payment!

Not surprised he was allowed to put it on…imagine if the tech misaligned it and messed with his putting LOL.

And really i thought Sergio was experienced in doing shop work as he installs his own grips on his irons and grinds his own wedges in the tour van?

I bought the same grip from DSG just 2 weeks ago. Next up, becoming one of the best ball strikers in the world.

Still not as cool as Furyk buying a used putter at Joe and Leigh’s the week of the Deutsche Bank and winning the FedEx cup with it.

That was good. If i remember correctly, he chose that particular one because it was the only putter in the shop which had the grip on straight / square to target. Brilliant.

So, no one should ever post/write a story again until it lives up to that billing, got ya!

Either way, great experience for the guys in the shop, even tho they should never tell anyone because it isn’t as good as Furyk’s story…

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
