Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

The Diablo Forged irons are one of the best irons from callaway if you take the time to get a shaft fitting. These probably would not top them or be equal to them at best.

No, no they are not, GolfWRX. You’ve been hoodwinked. GTFO.

OT, but has anyone tried Apex irons with Nippon shafts?

I was hoping they would have looked more like the 13 forged with the improved technology and larger groove spacing. Say what you will about look at address being most important. I feel more confident pulling a blade looking iron from the bag. These look like GI irons to me. I guess I can pull the trigger on the apex mb’s. I feel a bit let down for sure.

I like the way the forged one looks. I’m sure it performs.

for those that would have liked to do a combo set of Apex and Apex Pro’s would you go from a satin finish long iron to a polished chrome finish? Not sure why Callaway would change the finish between the two that much but im sure they have their reasons. Also if your not into the polished chrome look you can always get some green scotch brite pads and puff it out yourself, I did this on my original RTX wedges.

You gotta like them to buy them and that starts with appearance; ugly. I hate bright chrome; has always looked cheap to me.

Where is gone the legacy of the name Apex ?
To the designer of the x-forged 2013 –> I will not be surprised if the guys on tour still use more x-forged 2013 than apex pro. Even Apex and Apex Pro combined.

Legacy is the JDM line. I game the Legacy Blacks, still one of the best looking, performing and feeling players CBs anywhere. At least I think so

Gorgeous. They have really outdone themselves. I’m assuming the issues with finish will have been addressed and fixed. Well done, Callaway!

Design 101. You don’t mix 3 fonts within 1 inch of each other like of the pro.

There meant for the guy that needs help, can’t get out to practice daily, has to balance family life and other things, WHILE still enjoying the game of golf. Everything can’t be blades, otherwise the game would have died years ago…..

Does it matter what the outside of your car looks like? You can’t see it while you’re driving. Does it matter what your hair looks like? You can’t see it unless you look in the mirror.
I like that the Apexes don’t have the strangely plain rubber bumper. i don’t like that they and the Pros look less classy.

The only aesthetics I am concerned with is how it looks when I address the ball, not how it looks in my bag. Last time I checked, I am not looking at the back of my club when playing a shot. If it looks good and plays/feels good, then game on.

With respect to the Apex, it will be interesting to learn from Callaway how this new version differs from the irons it is replacing.
Will the face scuff up immediately like the current version?
Is the face made of the same material as the current version?
Why is the rubber insert on the back still there although in a different iteration?

I have both Apex and Apex Pros. The Apexs look like a slightly redesigned update of the previous model. The new Apex Pros are more GI appearing than the previous versions. It will be interesting to hit these and see if there are any advantages over my current sets.

Performance with golf clubs in the right hands is the criteria NOT judgement by a photo ????
So comment AFTER you have tried them ????

or don’t settle…. I guess there are two ways of looking at it. But I myself am a big believer in trying them out first to see if they can perform…. you know what I mean

Looks to chunky. Like a cobra… What happened to the nice lines of the first one? They are on sale I noticed. May have to find a set at boxing day for $350 if there are any left.

I think that it’s becoming pretty clear that Callaway dropped the ball with this one. Exactly why OEMs should give a sneak peak into irons during the proto phase…it would greatly cut back on catastrophes like this!

I think they probably have a little better idea what the market wants without reading posts from a bunch of people looking at a pic on a website.

Sep 28, 2015 at 10:29 am
Bill, but that’s the way it rolls here, take new shafts, when a pic is posted everyone wants it without (in 95% of the cases) any idea of what the specs are and will that shaft even work for that person, this forum is site driven and egos rule depending on what’s in your bag…. How dare you (sic) state something obvious and use logic….how dare you!
They are probably right… Nice try on your part though….

Is it just me or are these new irons coming out from various builders looking like the Titleist/Mizuno models? They look similar if not close to the same. I still like the look but if you took all the branding off the iron it would look like a Titleist or Mizuno to me.

Guess all the comments when people say how they like the satin finishes vs. chrome fall on deaf ears. OEM’s only care about what is easier to see on tv and catches the most light on the show room floor. Sad.

Sep 16, 2015 at 1:01 pm
I always thought it was ridiculous to judge a golf club based on a single Internet photo if the back of a clubhead. But comparing the current Apexes (beautiful, functional, classic) to these … Is sad.
I expect that club designers have some sophisticated market data that tells them what sells in big box golf stores, and this is it. (Let’s face it; the Titleist AP1 and AP2 lines feature some of the same junky decoration; yet they are quality clubs.). Not for me.

Apex Pro… from beautiful to ugly. On the other hand, if it works, I don’t care if there are fins on the back of my clubhead.
