Spotted: Titleist CB Forged 716 irons

Published

on

Here are in-hand photos of Titleist’s new CB Forged 716 irons, which we spotted on the the range at the Quicken Loans National on Tuesday. Titleist is mum on details, but the photos show that the long irons (4-7) have a tungsten weight in the toe to improve forgiveness.

I don’t see anything wrong with the “Tungsten” engraving on the toe (it’s a selling point). In fact I like the square toe look of these heads.

Can they make it busier? Need more words, like the loft number. I need more engravings

Gotta get rid of the word tungsten.

Agree these are best looking so far of the 716 models. Interesting to see what the specs are (loft, length).

It looks like some of the design queues from the Callaway Legacy towards the toe. Overall they look good.

I would love to see this up against the new Hogans to see which clubs play more forgiving.

Now this is interesting that short irons don’t have the Tungsten weights. And so those also look more appealing to the eye

The Tungsten and CB writing look super tacky

Does anyone else look at these and see 990Bs? They look a lot like them. Now if they brought back some forged 962Bs I’d rethink my upcoming set of MP5s.

I think the new AP2s look better. I prefer the look of my 710cbs over both. I could sure use a bit more forgiveness…

I like the look. Classy yet suggests increased forgiveness vs the 714 CB.

Get rid of “tungsten”, “forged” and “CB” and it’s perfect!!

Even the new PING irons have Tungsten but PING realized they should remove the word from the clubbed. Good.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
