Streb putts with wedge at Greenbrier, makes five birdies
Updated July 5, 7:45 p.m.
Robert Streb made five birdies on the back-nine of The Greenbrier Classic without a putter, using a 56-degree sand wedge instead.
After the ninth hole of the final round, Streb’s putter got damaged while tossing it to his caddy, forcing him to finish the tournament without a flat stick.
With a back-nine 32, and a 65 for the day, Streb made it into a four-man playoff. He exercised his right to use a back-up putter for extra holes, but was eliminated on the first hole after failing to make birdie.
See his sand wedge putting technique below:
Robert Streb just made a 5-footer with a wedge to tie the clubhouse lead. That’s a new kind of clutch. #QuickHits http://t.co/BmuanZoH9d

strange timing here. I was messing around on the chipping green rolling puts with my 58* and noticed what a great end over end roll it produced time after time…Went down to my local PGA Superstore and found the closest putter to a wedge…old vintage Wilson 8802. It’s in my bag and for whatever reason it’s the best putter I’ve used ever.

While it’s not my main putter, I also like that 8802 head shape for the same reason. It almost feels like I’m putting with an iron, which I can usually line up well. That’s also why I enjoy doing bump-and-runs from right off the green with a low lofted iron.

Hmmmm……wond’a what the MOI is on a wedge, something like a 4 maybe? Lol! Like thumbing his nose at all putter manufactures. Awesome improve with the wedge to get into the playoff. Now, who will be the first to produce the PutterWedge? Well done Streb!

Do this a lot chipping and putting with a wedge as cantbe bothered to use a putter works well as puts a true roll on the ball better than any putter when you hit the ball on the equator.its nothing new and am sure many people do it when practising.
so much for putter inserts all a load of bs.

Robert Streb is a fellow Montgomerie acolyte…doing a fantastic facsimile of Colin’s swing…
This was so freaking cool to watch him wedging in putts…to do that on PGA Tour speed greens is unimaginable….
Go Streb and long live the Reverse C!!!!

He could not replace it? He did not intentionally break it?

Broke it not in the act of swinging…same as intentionally doing it.

The rule states a club that unintentionally broken during play may be replaced. This was unintentional.

Unbelievable…..I’m sure no one practices this, but that’s what seperates them from everyone else, lots of natural ability in this game. Some people will never see 5 birdies in a round, this guy drains 5 with a wedge.

I first saw this many years ago (30+). It was a standard shot when up against taller grass but ball on fringe. The wedge putts much better there than a putter does. I’m sure most pros know and practice this at least a bit.
