Day’s thumb injury remains an issue at The Open
Jason Day sought medical attention for his left thumb immediately after Round 1 play of The Open Championship. He shot a 1-over-par 73 despite playing in obvious discomfort throughout the day.
On hole No. 14, Day’s iron shot from the fescue caused him to immediately drop his club and grab his hand in pain. The reaction seemed to warrant a WD shortly thereafter, but the 26-year-old decided to complete the round.
“I can feel it on cold days it just kind of radiates, but as long as I warm up properly and do the right things I think I’ll be fine,” Day said about the bruised bone earlier in the week, according to a story from The Golf Channel.
The pain Day appeared to be in came as somewhat of a surprise, as he assured the media in his press conference on Wednesday that his thumb wouldn’t be an issue going forward.
“It’s fine. It’s fine,” Day said. “I just have to watch it. It was a precaution when I pulled out the other week. It’s nothing to worry about it … I missed three months of the season and this is only my ninth event for the year, so I haven’t really played that much golf this year. I am hoping to get my 15 events in for the year”
Day has struggled with the left thumb injury since shortly after he won the WGC-Accenture Match Play in March. It forced him to miss about three months of action this spring, and more recently he withdrew from the Greenbrier Classic in what he called a “precautionary” move.
Day’s last completed appearance on Tour was a missed cut at the Quicken Loans National, but he’s still ranked No. 6 according to the Official World Golf Rankings. Day can surpass Adam Scott, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the OWGR, with a win this week as long as Scott finishes worse than 22nd. But for now, let’s hope that the Australian’s immense talent isn’t jeopardized by this lingering thumb injury.

Hopefully he doesn’t become Anthony Kim 2.0 with all of the same secondary injuries that have wiped out AK for how many years now.

I think Jason needs to visit Tiger’s doctor for some “blood spinning.” A few PEDs will really help him.

I wish he would give it time to heal. I can’t imagine it would be doing him any good to be playing in pain. I know it’s the best major of the year but I think he needs to give it some time to heal. Would hate to see him do permanent damage just so that he played his 15 events for the season. Take a break Jason and let it heal.

Looks like he has a bad case of de quervain’s tendinitis. A very common injury among golfers
