Tweets of the week: The Match at Mission Hills
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy flew to Haikou, China, collected sizable appearance fees and played an 18-hole exhibition match dubbed alliteratively “The Match at Mission Hills.” Since we in the U.S. were deprived of the theatre that was the Match at Mission Hills due to viewing restrictions (McIlroy shot 67 to the flu-addled Woods’ 68), this edition of “Tweets of the week” is focused entirely on the Nike staffers’ Far-Eastern duel.
The American media didn’t have boots on the ground in abundance, and of course the match couldn’t be viewed in the U.S. per PGA Tour regulations. Nevertheless, here are a few scraps from the world of social media concerning the Woods-McIlroy spectacle.
First, an item (it’s a video!) from freelance golf writer (and proprietor of Wei Under Par) Stephanie Wie, who was on hand to cover the event. Click through to watch Rory clowning around with his wedge.
Second, another item from Ms. Wei, representative of the bro-ish exchanges that dominated the match between Woods and McIlroy. Here, Tiger is seen checking out his opponent’s putter, something that’s slightly more common in exhibition matches than regular Tour play, I suspect.
Of course it wasn’t all fun and games, as Tiger and Rory weren’t merely screwing around on a random Chinese golf course for their own amusement, they were doing it for hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of dollars. The pervasive awareness of this fact seemed to underlie much of the related social media and seasoned the spectacle with a pinch of absurdity. Senior golf analyst at FOXSports, Robert Lusetich, certainly saw things through green-colored glasses, indicating that McIlroy, who likely collected less than Woods, had money on his mind at his post-match presser.
Perhaps the most relevant news item from either golfer’s press conference was Tiger Woods’ response to a line of questioning about the Brandel Chamblee situation. Woods tacitly pressed Golf Channel to do away with the embroiled analyst, as related in this tweet from Golfweek.
Golf World indicated via Twitter that Woods didn’t feel that Chamblee’s apologetic tweets tied a bow on the situation. The world No. 1 is still seeking a resolution—or perhaps restitution.
Of course, most of the chatter in the Twitterverse surrounded the fact that (due to PGA Tour regulations) the match wasn’t televised in the U.S. Golf Channel’s Tiger Tracker (who didn’t make the trip to Haikou) offered his perspective on the situation.

Chamblee, no career himself in his PGA. With the stroke of a pen attempts to ruin another’s? I started golf a year ago and have fallen in love. However attacks like this let’s me know that we as a people don’t stand a chance.

First, McIlroy needs to start winning here in America and show his contention in the FEDX Cup. THEN, he can become an entertainer. Right now he is just a punk kid with too much money.

I can’t believe this match went under the radar.I would have like to see it. Another rule that makes no sense.
