Tiger testing a prototype Nike Covert driver at the British Open

Published

Finally, there is photo evidence that Tiger Woods is testing a Nike Covert driver.

The photo, from AP, comes from Tiger Woods’ Sunday practice round at the British Open, where the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer was testing a glued version of a Nike VR_S Covert driver with a Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana White Board shaft.

Click here to read our full story on Tiger’s prototype Nike Covert driver, which we spotted on the USGA’s conforming list of driver heads on June 25.

Many people originally thought the photo showed Tiger hitting his similar looking Nike VR_S Covert 3 wood, which also has a glued, or non-adjustable hosel. But Tiger plays a Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana Blue Board 103X shaft in his 3 wood, which lacks the white flower graphics that are evident in the photo just below the grip.

Additional photos have also been taken since the original photo was published, confirming that Woods is in fact playing a Covert Version 5 driver.

While it is often unusual for a golfer to change clubs before a major championship, the British Open may be the perfect time for Woods to make such a change. He will likely hit driver sparingly if at all at Muirfield, making it a low-pressure switch.

It also wouldn’t be the first time Woods has made an equipment change before a major this year. While he has been notoriously slow to change equipment in his career, he debuted his Covert 3 wood at this year’s Masters, where he hit the club extremely well off the tee.

IF THE COVERT AIN’T SELLING WELL ITS BECAUSE NIKE SEEM TO PROMOTE THE ATHLETE NOT THE CLUBS WHICH IS NOT THE WAY TO GO

The covert driver isn’t selling very well at retail in my area, there are a dozen or so in in the trade in rack, perhaps Cindy Davis has called in a desperate favor for tiger to get some free press out of it????

I work for a golf retailer and nike is no where close to hitting the panic button for pushing units or press. Nike is up close to 90% so far this year where Taylor Made is way down from last year.

I too work for a retailer, and Taylormade is going to be down no matter what… they had 52% of the market last year. More then every other company combined. Nike woods aren’t moving any better then the VRS did from last year. There is more interest, but less consumers pulling the trigger as of now. If they drop their prices like Tmag and Callaway have already, I think they will see bigger gains.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
