Roll it like Rose with a replica Spider Blade

Published

on

To commemorate Justin Rose’s first major championship victory at the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, TaylorMade is releasing 99 replicas of the Spider Blade putter that he used in victory.

The number 99 matches the number on his TaylorMade Lethal golf balls, and is also his wife’s favorite number, 9, written twice.

Click here to read more about Rose’s counter-balanced Spider Blade putter.

The limited-edition putter will come equipped with all of Rose’s specs: 37 5/8 inches long, a Black Ghost tour shaft and a Tour Only Counterbalanced grip colored yellow at the butt end. Each putter head will also be numbered and stamped with Rose’s “JR” logo. It costs $299 — $100 more than a standard Spider Blade putter.

According to TaylorMade, having more weight in the grip of the putter works to slow down the stroke and keep the face square to the intended line. Lee Trevino once quipped while assessing golf clubs, “Its not the arrow; it’s the Indian.”  This, of course, is an opinion that golfing skill is more important than the club itself.

As golf club enthusiasts, we choose to disagree with Lee Trevino on this matter. We are exceedingly intrigued about the arrows each Indian has in his quiver, with the mindset that technology reigns supreme.

TaylorMade is not only giving us a peek into Justin Rose’s bag, but is providing the opportunity to play with his putter.

During the Chicago Bulls’ dominance in the early to mid-90’s, people wanted to “be like Mike,” and bought Nike’s “Jordan” shoes with hopes to fly like Michael Jordan.  Now, in the wake of Justin Rose’s U.S. Open victory, 99 lucky customers will purchase his TaylorMade putter with hopes to “roll it like Rose.”

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
