SuperStroke U.S. Open putter grips

Published

on

You’ve said it to yourself before:

If I makes this putt, I win the U.S. Open.

You, me and nearly every other serious golfer in the world has played the role of a soon-to-be major champion at some point. It’s a way for us to feel closer to the championships we admire, and share the joy we’ve felt when out favorite golfers have won (actual) major championships.

This year, SuperStroke has decided to put those major championships directly into golfers hands with its major championship-inspired putter grips.

The grips, which are limited to about 500 pieces for each championship, sold out in a matter of days the week of The Masters. And SuperStroke Marketing Director Jon Luna expects the same thing to happen with the company’s U.S. Open putter grips.

“Golfers, especially the ones on GolfWRX, want small batch stuff that not everyone can get,” Luna said. “It makes it that much more special in their eyes.”

The U.S. Open putter grips are available on SuperStroke’s website for $29.99 in the company’s 1.0 (Ultra Slim) 2.0 (Mid Slim), 3.0 (Slim) and 5.0 (Fatso) sizes, and are identical to the retail models in weight and size. But they have a red-white-and-blue color scheme that not only honors golf’s most grueling major — it shows an arrangement of colors that could become a part of the company’s product line in the future.

“With the major grips, we want to show golfers what we can do,” Luna said. “The pattern on the top quarter of the grip has become synonymous with our company, so to be able to do it in two colors is a step forward because our customers have been requesting certain colors and graphics.”

Other custom touches to the limited-edition U.S. Open grip include an homage to Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell (this year’s tournament takes place at Merion Golf Club, located in the suburbs of Philadelphia), as well as a stars-and-stripes section that flanks the sides of the grips. The words “U.S. Open” are stenciled in under the Liberty Bell, and “Merion 2013” is printed along the seam on the back of the grip.

Kudos to Super Slim for a tastefully done niche grip.

However, what we really need is the black/gray grip that is available in Japan this summer to better hide the grime of sweaty hands.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
