First Look: Wilson Staff FG Tour Prototype Irons

Published

on

Check out the photos below we shot of Wilson Staff’s latest prototype iron, the FG Tour M3 Forged.

According to Michael Vrska, global director of golf R&D for Wilson Staff, the irons are still in the development stage and likely won’t be released until early in 2014.

The prototype irons have more offset and are marginally larger than the company’s FG Tour V2 irons currently played by Kevin Streelman and Padraig Harrington, which makes them a little more forgiving. They also have wider soles with more camber than the V2’s, and a black PVD finish instead of the V2’s chrome finish.

Vrska said that Streelman, Harrington, Ricky Barnes and Jim Herman have been testing the irons on the PGA Tour since February of this year. Their feedback has resulted in minor tweaks such as slightly less offset and changes to the sole. Overall, Vrska said that the players have been very pleased with the shape of the irons, but he expects more tweaks to be made before a design is finalized.

When the irons are released, Vrska said that they won’t replace any of the company’s current offerings — they’re an effort to bolster the amount of “better player” forged irons.

“These are filling out our range,” Vrska said.

The Black PVD finish will fade over time, but it won’t rust.

Love my V2 irons, I do not like the black finish and the thick top line edge of the M3’s

I like the design and finish, but appears to have a lot of offset. I like the sole. I play the original FG Tours and have played my best golf ever with them but they have a sharp leading edge which is challenging on some lies. The new model looks a little less severe. I’ll definitely try them when they hit the market.

Yep, I think I found a safe replacement or my CB 2’s. Let the waiting game begin!

Constructive suggestion – Make sure they describe or ask them: specifics,,,, e.g. What model of Fuji Shaft in Driver, and what brand/model of 5 wood?

Wow, those irons look pretty good. Vrska was the lead designer on one of the best irons I’ve ever played, the Adams CB2s. You can see similarities to the CB2s in these new irons. I bet they feel great too.

That’s because TM writes him a large check every week that it’s in the bag… as they do for EVERY tour player that puts their driver in play every single week. And that includes Monday qualifier no-names as well. PH’s Wilson contract doesn’t require driver usage so why not make some easy extra money every week?

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
