Cobra AMP Cell Goes Patriotic for U.S. Open

Published

on

The Cobra AMP Cell Driver is getting another makeover just in time for the U.S. Open.

Cobra announced Monday that it would releasing 600 red, white and blue AMP Cell Pro drivers, available for sale starting June 1. The street price for the drivers are $399, and they will be available at select authorized Cobra retailers.

Unlike the limited-edition Masters AMP Cell driver released last month, the Pro model has lower adjustable lofts — 7.5 to 10.5 degrees instead of 8.5 to 11.5 degrees. The Pro also has two fade settings, 8.5 Fade and 9.5 Fade, rather than the standard model’s draw settings. The limited edition comes stock with Adila’s RIP Phenom shaft, which will be available for righties in stiff and regular flexes.

“We love driving excitement around our brand with limited edition products,” said Jose Miraflor, director of Cobra’s product marketing, in a company press release. “The golfing community is so patriotic, especially around the U.S. Open — we felt it was the perfect time to introduce a limited edition color to our AMP Cell Pro Driver line — complete with our innovative technology platforms: MyFly, SmartPad, Advanced Material Placement and E9 Face.”

The color scheme that celebrates the U.S. Open puts blue on the rear portion of the sole and crown of the head, with a large white strip that showcases Cobra’s Cell technology in the middle. After that, there is a thin strip of more blue paint that showcases Cobra’s SmartPad. The red is found on the bottom on the “Cobra” stamping, as well as on the face, shaft sleeve and ferrule. In standard Cobra fashion, the red, white and blue theme also continues on the grip, headcover and wrench.

Normal AMP Cell drivers come in blue, orange, red or silver. GolfWRX gave the AMP Cell driver four out of five stars in its review last month. Click here to read the full review.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
