Best irons for senior golfers – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing irons for the senior golfers. WRXer ‘Hunter17’ is on the hunt for a new set of irons for his 85-year-old grandfather, and kicks off the conversation saying:
“I’m trying to help my grandfather find a new set of irons. He is 85, plays 1–2 times a week, and still shoots in the mid-high 80s.
I got him on my launch monitor and his 7i swing speed is around 60 mph. He also launches the ball really low, around 20–30 feet peak height. His swing is a little steep, which I’m helping him work on, but he’s currently not happy with the feel of his irons.
He currently plays Cleveland HALO XL Full Face irons with the 59g senior graphite shafts, and says they feel a little heavy. I was thinking about looking into lighter ladies flex graphite shafts (~40g) to help him generate a little more speed and launch.
The one thing I noticed is most ladies iron sets are about 1″ shorter standard length. He’s 5’7”, so I’m not sure if that would hurt him or maybe even help him.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- ProjectX: “Titleist T250* is designed for this exact purpose. High lofts to launch the ball up and the heads are 6 grams lighter than standard. If he’s shooting in the 80’s he’s still a plenty good ball striker so I wouldn’t worry about them being tough to hit. Get those with his shaft of choice and if he still wants them to feel lighter find a heavier grip.”
- spartan6910: “If you’re not afraid of going non-major-OEM, check out the Maltby M980 from Golfworks. Just got a set for my girlfriend, a beginner golfer, and she’s never launched the ball better. Insanely easy to hit.”
- GG194: “Not quite that age but getting close and probably a similar swing speed. I have found that jacked lofts are my biggest enemy, played an iron set last summer with a 27* seven iron and still trying to recover. Thomas Campbell when he was with Swing Lab Performance Golf had a couple of excellent videos on seven iron distance and loft and swing speed. Edit: Due to my poor swing I need the larger game improvement head size because I struggle with smaller heads. Sort of limits me to older irons.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Srixon zxi r HL would be my recommendation. You can spec them out online with 50 gram shafts and grips the whole 9 . My father games them loves them. Traditional lofts big sweet spot feel incredibly soft for not being forged and he could blend right in to his wedge set with a 45 degree pitching wedge in that set with out the nonsense going on in those irons with 2 gap wedges in a set .

Get him some hybrid irons set! A women’s shaft. He’ll launch club higher, and probably shot a 78
