Spider spotting: New TaylorMade putter models at Harbour Town
A day after Rory McIlroy captured his second green jacket at the Masters Tournament, using a unique torched finish on his Spider Tour X putter, TaylorMade dropped a whole new line of putters at the RBC Heritage, which looked to be inspired by the same cosmetics as McIlroy’s.
Four models were available for pros to try around the practice putting green at Harbour Town Golf Links, all featuring the new burnt PVD finish, just slightly darker than McIlroy’s handcrafted, sand-blasted look. Our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, was out early to capture in-hand shots of them all.
Two of the offerings were familiar heads, in the Spider Tour and Tour X, not much had changed there from a first eye-check. Both feature the same head profile and interchangeable heel and toe weighting in the rear. There were, however, two newer models: a redesigned Tour V and the all-new Tour F.

The Tour V has been available in the past for the Spider line, but from what meets the eye with the newer versions, it looks like the team at TaylorMade has shrunk the overall profile of the mallet, especially with the total length of the mallet. Along with the smaller head, the angles of the heel and toe are more noticeable than in previous designs. It was this time last year that Collin Morikawa added the older Tour V into his bag, a perfect comparison for the two heads.

Another interesting note with the Tour V design was the lack of True Path Alignment, something that has been an integral part of Scottie Scheffler’s drastic improvement on the greens. The Spider Tour F, obviously, doesn’t feature it as well due to its wing-mallet design. It’s the model that caught headlines a few weeks ago when we spotted Tommy Fleetwood testing it at the Valero Texas Open, and it’s in the bag of Pierceson Coody.

Each putter model, along with the finish, sees a change in the sole plate compared to the most recent Spider line. The putters on offer to PGA Tour pros in Hilton Head adopt the aesthetics seen on TaylorMade’s Spider ZT line: a black plate with an embossed web pattern, along with a neon blue spider logo and model text. There’s an added Spider cut into the heel of the Pure Roll insert.
An array of necks was also available for testing, including L-Neck (Plumbers), short slant, single- and double-bend, as well as center-shafted options.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
