What’s your golf gear weakness? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing their golf gear weaknesses. WRXer ‘BowMain42’ kicks off the discussion saying:

“We’ve all got one.  How do I know?  Because we’re here.  What’s yours?  When you are at a garage sale, thrift shop, swap meet, golf store, etc… you make a beeline for anything golf.  Don’t pretend that you don’t.  We have you on 4kHD camera.  What’s the little voice (or the big voice) in your head saying you’re hoping to find and quite likely purchase?  What’s the one thing that, should they have an appropriate specimen, you’re highly unlikely to leave without despite the fact that you really have no need for it?  Shoes?  Balls?  Ball markers?  Paintings/photographs?  Headcovers?  Magazines?  I have two:

1- Putters.  They’re just fun.  You can putt pretty much anywhere.  There are all kinds of crazy ideas in putters that all, at the end of the day, do the same thing.  I’m horrible at resisting putters, and they’re almost always the #1 thing on my mind when there’s anything golf related available.

2- Fairway woods, specifically 3 woods.  My house is always in danger of becoming ‘The Main42 Home For Wayward 3 Woods’, and I’m not sure why.  Maybe because flushing a 3 wood with a high, tight draw is incredibly satisfying?  Maybe it’s because they usually sound amazing when you do so?  Maybe because there are always used 3 woods any time there’s anything golf-related?  I really have no idea why this is one of my two weaknesses… but it is.  I’m doing my best to rehabilitate myself for it to be 5 woods… but I’m sure it’ll take a while.  I don’t even bag a 3 all that often… but I invariably take at least one on range trips.

I can dang near ignore pretty much anything else most of the time.”

And our members have been sharing their main ‘weaknesses’ in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • jwhite86: “Shoes: I’ve got 300+ pairs of every day shoes and probably 20 pairs of golf shoes. When I see a pair I like, I’m weak. Outerwear: Q-Zips, Vests, Jackets. Don’t need ’em, but love ’em. Putters: So many designs, wacky ideas. And who doesn’t need a staff bag full of putters?”
  • jwacky: “Probably polos and quarter-zips. I seem to have disproportionally more of them than anything else golf related. I justify them as being work clothes, too. A nice visor or accessory pouch can be hard to resist but I’m generally ok with avoiding those sections.”
  • CyFan: “First, putters. Putting is what holds me back from scoring well, so I’m always looking for something new that might be magic.  Second, irons…because maybe if I can hit more greens it’ll offset my putting.  Or I could practice, but that’s not likely to happen.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
