Why are more pros using offset heavy wedges?
In our forums, our members have been discussing the use of offset heavy wedges. WRXer ‘Rocco20008.25’ kicks off the discussion noting that Gary Woodland and Rickie Fowler both have a heavy offset wedge in the bag, saying:
“Gary Woodland just won the Houston Open with a very offset heavy lob wedge similar to what Rickie has been gaming recently. It looks similar too one of the greatest wedges ever, Ping Eye 2, which also had a ton of offset.
I was wondering if anyone knows what this does and why more tour pros are using it again?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Meanbeav77: “I believe Tour Edge is the only company that makes a forged offset wedge for the public at the moment. I know they mention Bernard has been a long time user of offset wedges. Supposed to help keep the hands in front of the leading edge for better contact.”
- bladehunter: “Vokey 300 series is this way. If anyone wants a cheap experiment.”
- bobfoster: “Maybe just me, but I could never play with that much weight and offset. I’d be taking “cleanup on aisle five” divots. Cleary however, Gary can. In spades. It’s golf. We all try to optimize for our own unique swings.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Easy to chip with, easier to hit flop shots.
Tricky out of the sand though……

Can’t someone just bend a higher lofted wedge string to create offset?

Sure, but then you have to deal with less bounce.
So these are built with the offset AND the appropriate bounce

My first wedges were old Ram Ton Watson Scoring System wedges. One was a 60 degree with 13 degrees of “rake” and the other was a copper 55 degree SW. (No promoted “rake” on the sole)
Both of which had offset and the 55 had much more of it. Super square at address. I noticed the offset helped with chipping and pitching. If you can find these on ebay for like 20 or 30 bucks in pretty good condition, its worth a look. The 60 was almost entirely meant for short greenfield shots. It was one giant shovel of a head.
